Jerusalem’s Godlessness

(A)Roam about through the streets of Jerusalem,
And look and take notice.
And seek in her public squares,
If you can (B)find a person,
(C)If there is one who does justice, who seeks honesty,
Then I will forgive [a]her.
And (D)although they say, ‘As the Lord lives,’
Certainly they swear falsely.”
Lord, do (E)Your eyes not look for honesty?
You have (F)struck them,
But they did not [b]weaken;
You have consumed them,
But they (G)refused to accept discipline.
They have (H)made their faces harder than rock;
They have refused to repent.

Then I said, “They are only the poor,
They are foolish;
For they (I)do not know the way of the Lord
Or the judgment of their God.
I will go to the great
And speak to them,
For (J)they know the way of the Lord
And the judgment of their God.”
But together they too have (K)broken the yoke
And burst the restraints.
Therefore (L)a lion from the forest will kill them,
A (M)wolf of the deserts will destroy them,
A (N)leopard is watching their cities.
Everyone who goes out of them will be torn in pieces,
Because their (O)wrongdoings are many,
Their apostasies are numerous.

“Why should I forgive you?
Your sons have forsaken Me
And (P)sworn by those who are (Q)not gods.
When I had fed them to the full,
They (R)committed adultery
And stayed at the prostitute’s house.
They were well-fed lusty horses,
Each one neighing at his (S)neighbor’s wife.
Shall I not punish them for these things?” declares the Lord,
“And (T)shall I not avenge Myself
On a nation such as this?

10 “Go up through her vine rows and destroy,
But do not execute a complete destruction;
Strip away her branches,
For they are not the Lords.
11 For the (U)house of Israel and the house of Judah
Have dealt very treacherously with Me,” declares the Lord.
12 They have (V)lied about the Lord
And said, “[c](W)Not He;
Misfortune will (X)not come upon us,
(Y)Nor will we see sword or famine.
13 The (Z)prophets are as wind,
And the word is not in them.
So it will be done to them!”

Judgment Proclaimed

14 Therefore, this is what the Lord, the God of armies says:
“Because you have spoken this word,
Behold, I am (AA)making My words fire in your mouth,
And this people wood, and it will consume them.
15 Behold, I am (AB)bringing a nation against you from far away, you house of Israel,” declares the Lord.
“It is an enduring nation,
It is an ancient nation,
A nation whose (AC)language you do not know,
Nor can you understand what they say.
16 Their (AD)quiver is like an (AE)open grave,
All of them are warriors.
17 They will (AF)devour your harvest and your food;
They will devour your sons and your daughters;
They will devour your flocks and your herds;
They will devour your (AG)vines and your fig trees;
They will demolish your (AH)fortified cities, in which you trust, with the sword.

18 “Yet even in those days,” declares the Lord, “I will not make a complete destruction of you. 19 And it shall come about (AI)when [d]they say, ‘Why has the Lord our God done all these things to us?’ then you shall say to them, ‘Just as you have abandoned Me and served foreign gods in your land, so you will (AJ)serve strangers in a land that is not yours.’

God’s Favor to Zion

[a]Then I raised my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a man with a (A)measuring line in his hand. So I said, “Where are you going?” And he said to me, “To (B)measure Jerusalem, to see how wide it is and how long it is.” And behold, the (C)angel who had been speaking with me was going out, and another angel was going out to meet him. And he said to him, “Run, speak to that (D)young man there, saying, ‘(E)Jerusalem will be inhabited (F)as open country because of the (G)multitude of people and cattle within it. But I,’ declares the Lord, ‘will be a (H)wall of fire to her on all sides, and I will be the (I)glory in her midst.’”

[b]You there! (J)Flee from the land of the north,” declares the Lord, “because I have (K)spread you out like the four winds of the heavens,” declares the Lord. [c]You, Zion! (L)Escape, you who are living with the daughter of Babylon.” For the Lord of armies says this: “After (M)glory He has sent me against the nations that plunder you, for the one who touches you, touches the [d](N)apple of His eye. For behold, I am going to (O)wave My hand over them so that they will be (P)plunder for their slaves. Then you will know that the Lord of armies has sent Me. 10 (Q)Shout for joy and rejoice, daughter of Zion; for behold I am coming and I will (R)dwell in your midst,” declares the Lord. 11 “And (S)many nations will join themselves to the Lord on that day and will become My people. Then I will (T)dwell in your midst, and you will (U)know that the Lord of armies has sent Me to you. 12 And the Lord will [e](V)possess Judah as His portion in the holy land, and will again (W)choose Jerusalem.

13 [f](X)Be silent, all [g]mankind, before the Lord; for He has (Y)roused Himself from His holy dwelling.”

Ministry in Galilee

23 Jesus was going (A)about in all of Galilee, (B)teaching in their synagogues and (C)proclaiming the [a]gospel of the kingdom, and (D)healing every disease and every sickness among the people.

24 And the news about Him spread (E)throughout Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and severe pain, (F)demon-possessed, people with (G)epilepsy, and people who were (H)paralyzed; and He healed them. 25 Large crowds (I)followed Him from Galilee and (J)the Decapolis, and Jerusalem, and Judea, and from (K)beyond the Jordan.

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

(L)Now when Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on (M)the [b]mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. And (N)He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,

[c](O)Blessed are the poor in spirit, for (P)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are (Q)those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

“Blessed are (R)the [d]gentle, for they will inherit the earth.

“Blessed are (S)those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied.

“Blessed are (T)the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

“Blessed are (U)the pure in heart, for (V)they will see God.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for (W)they will be called sons of God.

10 “Blessed are those who have been (X)persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for (Y)theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people (Z)insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for (AA)in this same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Disciples and the World

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but (AB)if the salt has become tasteless, how [e]can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by people.

14 “You are (AC)the light of the world. A city set on a [f]hill cannot be hidden; 15 (AD)nor do people light a lamp and put it under a [g]basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. 16 Your light must shine before people in such a way that they may (AE)see your good works, and (AF)glorify your Father who is in heaven.

17 “Do not presume that I came to abolish the (AG)Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. 18 For truly I say to you, (AH)until heaven and earth pass away, not [h]the smallest letter or stroke of a letter shall pass from the Law, until all is accomplished! 19 Therefore, whoever nullifies one of the least of these commandments, and teaches [i]others to do the same, shall be called least (AI)in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever [j]keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 “For I say to you that unless your (AJ)righteousness far surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Introduction

Paul, (A)an apostle ((B)not sent from men nor through human agency, but (C)through Jesus Christ and God the Father, who (D)raised Him from the dead), and all (E)the brothers who are with me,

To (F)the churches of Galatia:

(G)Grace to you and peace from [a]God the Father and our Lord Jesus Christ, who (H)gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from (I)this present evil [b]age, according to the will of (J)our God and Father, (K)to whom be the glory forevermore. Amen.

Distortion of the Gospel

I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting (L)Him who called you [c]by the grace of Christ, for a (M)different gospel, which is not just another account; but there are some who are (N)disturbing you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or (O)an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be [d](P)accursed! As we (Q)have said before, even now I say again: (R)if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be [e](S)accursed!

10 For am I now (T)seeking the favor of people, or of God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a (U)bond-servant of Christ.

Paul Defends His Ministry

11 For (V)I would have you know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel which was preached by me is (W)not [f]of human invention. 12 For (X)I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a (Y)revelation of Jesus Christ.

13 For you have heard of (Z)my former way of life in Judaism, how I (AA)used to persecute (AB)the church of God beyond measure and (AC)tried to destroy it; 14 and I (AD)was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my [g]countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my (AE)ancestral traditions. 15 But when [h]He who had set me apart even from my mother’s womb and (AF)called me through His grace was pleased 16 to reveal His Son in me so that I might (AG)preach Him among the Gentiles, (AH)I did not immediately consult with [i](AI)flesh and blood, 17 (AJ)nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went away to Arabia, and returned once more to (AK)Damascus.

18 Then (AL)three years later I went up (AM)to Jerusalem to [j]become acquainted with [k](AN)Cephas, and stayed with him for fifteen days. 19 But I did not see another one of the apostles except [l](AO)James, the Lord’s brother. 20 (Now in what I am writing to you, [m]I assure you (AP)before God that I am not lying.) 21 Then (AQ)I went into the regions of (AR)Syria and (AS)Cilicia. 22 I was still unknown by [n]sight to (AT)the churches of Judea which are (AU)in Christ; 23 but they only kept hearing, “The man who once persecuted us is now preaching (AV)the faith which he once (AW)tried to destroy.” 24 And they (AX)were glorifying God [o]because of me.
